Foreigners interested in studying in one of the most educated countries in Latin America can apply for an Argentine student visa to obtain temporary residence. To qualify, applicants must be formally enrolled as regular students in a RENURE (Registro Nacional Único de Requirentes de Extranjeros)-registered institution at the secondary, tertiary, undergraduate, or postgraduate level. An Argentine formal student residence can only be obtained if the duration of the academic study is at least 2 years (enseñanza formal), with a mandatory requirement for a certificate at the end of the course. This can be an academic diploma, a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree, or a Ph.D, but not tango classes or similar short-term courses.
Legal residence as a formal student can also contribute toward eligibility for Argentine citizenship by naturalization, subject to meeting the applicable legal requirements.
The citizenship process may take approximately one to one and a half years, depending on the circumstances and the relevant authorities.
The benefits of formal education in Argentina extend beyond academic opportunities. Eligible family members may also be able to obtain family reunification residence as dependents, either applying together with the main applicant or through a separate application after the DNI is obtained, eventually for the family to live together in Argentina.
Thousands of universities, academic entities, institutes, and companies are duly registered in the Registro Nacional Único de Requirentes de Extranjeros (Re.N.U.R.E.), in the attached list of educational organizations designated for the issuance of the necessary documents for Argentine student residency. Usually, the majority of public universities and bigger private universities are eligible to issue such required certificates, but not all of them do. The only way to check this is to contact the university directly by email, phone, or simply reach out to us to make your enrollment process smoother and more efficient.
Secondary schools start from grade 7 in Argentina. Some schools may start from grade 6. You need to consult with each specific designated school for details. Along with your child’s residency, dependents may apply for the residency as well.
The majority of academic studies are held in the Spanish language, except for bilingual schools, such as Lincoln, the American International School of Buenos Aires, which teaches in English and Spanish. Public universities are supported by the government, so you must know the Spanish language. Consult with our team for details.
The benefits of formal education in Argentina extend beyond academic opportunities. Eligible family members may also be able to obtain family reunification residence as dependents, either applying together with the main applicant or through a separate application after DNI is obtained, eventually allowing the family to live together in Argentina.
Similar to the Argentine Nomad Visa, the Spanish course-based Transitorial Residency does not allow to include your family members as dependents; the Spanish course route is mainly for singles or couples without children (provided each person applies separately). Furthermore, these transitory residencies do not count towards the citizenship by naturalization’s residency duration count. Long-term student visas do, but short-term tango classes or Spanish courses do not.
Typical documentation may include identity documents, proof of enrollment, civil-status documents where applicable, criminal-record documentation, proof of legal entry, and other supporting evidence. The exact requirements depend on the applicant’s nationality, age, family situation, educational program, immigration history, and other circumstances.
After an individual assessment, we prepare a customized document checklist and explain the legalization, apostille, and translation requirements applicable to the case.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Additional supporting evidence may be required. All documentation issued abroad must be duly legalized and, where applicable, translated by a certified Argentine public translator (Traductor Publico Nacional).

The foreign country high school diplomas must first be stamped with an apostille (under the Hague Convention).
If your country is not part of the Hague Convention, the diploma must be legalized by home country authorities and then attested by the Argentine Consulate in your home country. The translation into Spanish should be done by an officially registered Sworn Public Translator (Traductor Público Nacional) in Argentina and subsequently legalized by the Association of Translators (Colegio de Traductores Públicos) in Argentina.
After that, it undergoes validation/convalidation of foreign diplomas, which is administered by the Secretaría de Educación under the Ministry of Human Capital (formerly the Ministerio de Educación).
•Validation of Secondary School Diplomas (Convalidación de Títulos Secundarios) requires your apostilled diploma, transcript (analítico), and a valid ID/passport.
•Validation options for university degrees (Convalidación / Revalidación de Títulos Universitarios):
•Option 1 – Convalidación de Títulos Universitarios: Applies if your home country has a bilateral educational agreement or treaty with Argentina.
•Option 2 – Revalidation (Revalidación): Applies if no agreement exists. The degree is reviewed directly by an Argentine national university to determine equivalence or any additional exam requirements.
Argentina has a wide range of universities and educational institutions that may be able to support foreign students, depending on the type and duration of the program and the institution’s registration status.
We work with selected educational institutions and can help applicants identify programs that may be appropriate for their academic objectives and intended immigration pathway.
