Ecuador Residency Programs

1. Investor Residency Visa (Visa de Inversionista)

The Temporary Residence Visa for Investors is designed for foreign nationals who deploy capital into the Ecuadorian economy and open migration pathways. Financial thresholds are strictly tied to the country’s Salario Básico Unificado (SBU / Basic Unified Salary).

• Minimum Investment: Equal to 100 times the SBU, which sets the minimum requirement at USD 48,200, which may be structured through time deposits in Ecuadorian financial institutions, acquisition of real estate, or equity and shareholdings in companies duly registered in Ecuador.
• Eligible Asset Classes:
  • Real estate acquisitions (registered with the local Registro de la Propiedad).
    
    
  • Fixed-term bank certificates of deposit (CDs) with a minimum duration of 730 days at an authorized Ecuadorian financial institution.
  • Investment in shares or participation of active Ecuadorian corporations.

2. Rentista Residency (Visa de Rentista)

The Temporary Residence Rentista intended for individuals who receive stable, recurring passive income generated outside of Ecuador, such as rental income, dividends, or investment returns. The main requirement is to demonstrate that such income is stable, verifiable, and exceeds three unified basic salaries (approximately USD $1,500 per month), ensuring sufficient means to support their stay in the country.

• Financial Requirement: Proven recurring foreign income. Under current immigration guidelines, the baseline target is roughly USD 1,446 per month (adjusted dynamically to three times the SBU), plus dependent buffers.
   
• Qualifying Sources: Long-term real estate lease contracts, investment yields, stock dividends, corporate distributions, or annuities.

3. Digital Nomad Visa (Visa para Trabajo Remoto)

Ecuador’s specialized temporary residence for remote workers (Ecuadorian Nomad Visa) is for location-independent employees and independent contractors working exclusively for international employers or clients abroad, provided they can demonstrate an active professional relationship and a monthly income equal to or greater than three unified basic salaries (approximately USD $1,500).

• Health Insurance: Proof of a valid comprehensive national or international health insurance policy covering the entire duration of stay in Ecuador is strictly mandatory.

4. Pensioner / Retiree Residency (Visa de Jubilado)

The Temporary Residency Jubilado/Pensionado is tailored for individuals receiving lifetime guaranteed pension disbursements from foreign institutional entities. The temporary residency as a Pensioner is initially granted for two years, provided the applicant demonstrates a lifetime pension from a government entity or private insurance provider exceeding three unified basic salaries (approximately USD $1,500 per month).

This option does not require local employment and allows for the inclusion of dependents, facilitating a smooth transition to permanent residency.

Please note that the first step for this visa category is the registration of the university degree with MINEDEC, the Ecuadorian authority responsible for foreign degree recognition. This process generally takes 2–3 months. Once the degree has been successfully registered, we proceed with the visa application, which normally takes an additional 8–10 weeks.

6. Mercosur Residency

Within the framework of regional integration, citizens of Mercosur member and associated countries (including Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Bolivia, and Chile) enjoy a simplified, preferential Temporary Residence – Mercosur, which grants a two-year residency based on regional treaty agreements rather than capital deployment. Unlike other pathways, this category does not require a minimum investment, employment contract, or high income thresholds, as eligibility is primarily based on the applicant’s nationality.

It is typically granted as a temporary residency, with the possibility of later applying for permanent residency, facilitating mobility and long-term settlement within the region.

This option is particularly attractive for individuals seeking to relocate to Ecuador through a more flexible process while benefiting from South American regional integration.

7. Dependent Employment Visa (Visa de Trabajo)

When a job opportunity arises in Ecuador, the Temporary Residency Trabajo/Work, is intended for foreign professionals moving to Ecuador with a signed employment contract from an Ecuadorian business entity or local employer, duly registered in accordance with local regulations.

Through this visa, the holder is authorized to carry out remunerated activities legally, fully integrating into the Ecuadorian labor market.

• Key Requirement: The local hiring company must be in good standing with the local authorities, and the contract must be formally registered with the Ministry of Labor.

8. Student Visa (Visa de Estudiante)

9. Family Sponsorship Visa (Visa de Amparo)

The 21-Month Rule: To qualify for Permanent Residency, a foreign national must hold a Temporary Residency and continuously reside within Ecuador for a minimum of 21 months before submitting their permanent application.
