The Argentine government announced a citizenship by investment program, which requires a significant investment in the Argentine nation (Decreto DNU 366/2025). The procedures are to be carried out before the Ministry of Economy and the DNM, but they have not yet started as of March 29, 2026. On the other hand, Nacional Constitución (Art. 20) states that Argentine citizenship by naturalization can be obtained by residing continuously in the nation for two years; however, the authorities may shorten this term for anyone who requests it, alleging and proving services to the Republic.

Can Foreigners Buy Property In Argentina?

Foreigners can purchase rural land in Argentina, but certain restrictions apply under Law 26.737. You can’t directly purchase huge areas, such as 40,000 hectares; it must be done through an Argentine company or a fideicomiso (trust). Foreigners can own up to 15% of all rural land in Argentina, and this limit applies in each province. One foreign person or company can own up to 1,000 hectares in the central farming regions (Buenos Aires, Córdoba, and Santa Fe) and possibly more in other, less fertile areas. Buying land near large lakes, rivers, or border zones needs special government approval.

However, the Argentine government has officially announced a forthcoming bill to amend the current regime and lift restrictions on foreign ownership of rural land, with the reform expected to be submitted to Congress and potentially enacted into law in the nearest future.

During this period, the property is “blocked” in the registry to prevent any parallel transactions, giving the buyer a legal guarantee.
