Brazil Study Visa (VITEM IV)

The Residence Authorization for Study is aimed at a foreign national who intends to reside in Brazil in order to pursue educational activities. The regulation covers both the temporary visa and the residence authorization for the purpose of study. Specifically, the temporary visa may be granted to an immigrant who intends to carry out any of the following activities in Brazil:


       a regular course;
       an internship;
       an exchange of study;
      An exchange of research.

Thus, the purpose is to regularize the stay of the foreigner whose principal activity in Brazil will be education (course, internship, exchange, research) under an authorized regime.

Procedures

The immigrant must apply for a temporary visa or residence authorization through Brazilian consular authorities abroad or, if already in Brazil, through the Federal Police.

 

Eligibility Requirements:

I. Enrollment in a recognized Brazilian educational institution. Proof of financial means for the applicant’s stay in Brazil, or a scholarship, if applicable.

II. Proof of enrollment in the intended course (for regular study) or documentation confirming participation in an exchange or internship program.

III. Proof of sufficient financial means to cover living expenses in Brazil, or evidence of a scholarship, if applicable (employment is not permitted).

IV. Minimum study load of 15 hours per week.

V. Additional documents may be required depending on the particular case.

C. Proof of Enrollment (acceptance or admission letter from the university/school)
D. Bank Statements or Proof of Financial Support
Ε. Health Insurance (if required by the institution)
F. (For dependents) Marriage Certificate, Birth Certificate, or Proof of Dependency (apostilled & translated)

Residence Duration

The residence authorization for study is temporary, tied to the duration of the course, internship or exchange. The regulation states that renewal may be granted to allow complementary activities (for example, to withdraw diploma), but such renewal cannot exceed twelve months after the conclusion of the course. Thus, the validity period is aligned with the educational activity and cannot extend indefinitely under this specific modality.
